10 Questions You Should Ask Your Wedding Planner before you Sign

An amazing wedding planner will bring peace of mind, creativity, vendor guidance, budget insight, and experience from hundreds of past events so you can avoid any and all mistakes. Your planning experience should be enjoyable and the process should feel fun. So, as you browse for the perfect wedding planner for you, consider the following questions:

1. What services/specialties do you offer?

All planners work differently. It is so important to find a planner who matches or is flexible to the specific services you need. Also, be open-minded. Sometimes, you don’t know what you need, but discussing it with a planner will help you understand more. Note, that some focus more on design, some more on logistics, and some do a bit of both.

We do a bit of both! Learn more on our FAQ’s on what services we offer, and what you can expect for your design needs and for your logistical needs.

2. What is NOT included in your packages?

When searching for the perfect wedding planner for you, often a better approach is to ask what is NOT included in their package. You will often get a list of things a planner will do as a part of their service package, but, by asking what isn’t included, it may help you compare and narrow down your options so that you only pay for what you need.

Here are the services that are out of scope for our service packages.

3. What are your preferred communication preferences?

Ask about the planner’s preferred communication methods. You will be communicating A LOT throughout your engagement. Make sure their communications make sense and work for you. If there is something specific you need, just ask. Check out our Communication approach here.

4. How do you provide stress relief?

A wedding planner’s job is to provide stress relief. They should have a passion for all of the behind the scenes and be organized to facilitate it. This alone should provide stress relief, but understanding unique situations they’ve dealt with or custom techniques they have developed may assist you if you start to feel overwhelm. This should make your experience more enjoyable.

We offer a team of event professionals to assist you and one lead planner to guide you through all of your planning needs. We also offer an industry leading software to allow full transparency and efficency to your wedding planning journey.

5. How many weddings do you take on per year / per week?

You want your planner to have plenty of time to commit to planning YOUR wedding and customizing every detail. Depending on your needs, look for quality, not quantity. Also ask if they take on more than one wedding per weekend. A lot of energy is exerted from a wedding planner on your big day. Be cautious of the energy level they can commit if they take on back to back weddings.

We have a strict policy that no planner takes on more than one wedding per weekend and two weddings per month.

6. What was your wedding like? Did you hire a planner for your own wedding?

Not all wedding planners are married, but insight into their own wedding and wedding planning experience should tell a lot about their approach to wedding planning. It is nice to connect with someone who has been on the same journey you are about to embark upon. More interesting is if that wedding planner turned to another pro to help make sure their own wedding day went off without a hitch. Ask us about our journey in your Discover Call.

7. How do you ensure client satisfaction?

Wedding planner must be acutely aware of customer satisfaction. Ultimately their job is to ensure you and all of your guests have an amazing and delightful time. We take great pride in our ability to go above and beyond for our clients on their wedding day. We know how hard we work to ensure a flawless day, so being asked this question gives us time to talk about it!. If you ask a prospective wedding planner what lengths they have gone and you get silence or a long pause, you may want to keep looking at other options. Especially if your wedding has a lot of moving parts and the possibility of unforeseen circumstances.

7. We really want to do <insert your specific vision>. What do you think?

Sharing your ideas will give you a chance to get your planner’s opinion and see if they have a perspective. It also gives your planner a chance to determine whether they can mesh with your style. If you don’t ask, often a good planner will. A good planner is looking to interview you, as much as you are trying to interview them. Both parties want the right fit.

This is why we invite a 20-minute Discovery Call with all of our prospective clients so we can hear and understand your vision and ensure alignment.

8. What was your favorite wedding you planned this past year?

This is another opportunity to learn about the style and niche of your potential planner’s work. Listen to the details they share and what ideas get them really excited. You’ll get an insight into what is really interesting to the planner, as well as some of the creative ideas to bring to your own wedding.

9. What wedding budgets do you work with?

Every budget is different. Asking about the types of budgets your wedding planner typically works with will allow you to compare to your own budget. Often planners set minimums to provide a quality of quantity experience for their clients. They price they charge should be in line with the quality of services you can expect to receive.

We respect and work with all budgets. See more on our blog on how to have a budget-friendly wedding.

10. Do you work with or have referral agreements with any of the vendors or venues you work with?

Inquire on the types of relationships the wedding planner has with colleagues in the wedding industry. Be mindful to ensure you get recommendations that are in your best interest. Be careful of kickbacks or incentives for referrals to ensure you are working with a planner who only has your best interest in mind. Read more about kickbacks here.
